5 Things I Wish Customers Knew Before Buying a Chandelier

I’ve been in this business long enough to see the same patterns over and over. A customer falls in love with a chandelier online or in a showroom, brings it home, and then… something feels off. Not because the chandelier isn’t beautiful. But because there were a few things they didn’t know before they bought.
If I could sit down with every customer before they make a decision, here’s what I’d tell them.
I can’t tell you how many times someone has walked into my shop holding a photo on their phone, saying “this is the one,” only to see it in person and realize it’s completely different.
Size is the biggest culprit. A chandelier that looks delicate and airy in a professional photo might be massive in real life. Or worse, tiny. Lighting also plays tricks—professional shoots use perfect lighting to make every crystal sparkle. Your living room at 5 PM in December? Different story.
That’s why I always encourage people to see a chandelier in person if they can. And if you’re buying online, look for photos taken in real rooms, not just studio shots. Ask the seller for measurements. Compare those numbers to your own space. A little homework now saves a lot of regret later.
This one catches people by surprise all the time.
You find the perfect modern crystal chandelier. You order it. It arrives. You call an electrician (or decide to DIY). And then you discover your ceiling box is just a little plastic thing nailed into drywall, barely strong enough to hold a basic flush-mount light.
Crystal chandeliers are heavy. Even a modest-sized one can weigh 15, 20, even 30 pounds. You need a ceiling box rated for a fan or heavy fixture. If you don’t have one, it needs to be installed before anything else.
Check this before you buy. It’s not a dealbreaker—it’s just an extra step. But knowing ahead of time saves you the frustration of having your new chandelier sit in a box for weeks while you figure it out.
I’ve had customers tell me they never use their chandelier because it’s “too bright.” When I ask if they have a dimmer, they look at me like I just spoke another language.
A crystal chandelier for living room use needs a dimmer. Full stop. There are times you want it blazing, like when you’re hosting a dinner party and you want every crystal to catch the light. And there are times you want it low and soft, like when you’re curled up on the couch watching a movie.
Without a dimmer, you’re stuck with one setting. And that one setting is usually too bright for everyday life. Spend the extra $20 on a dimmer switch. You’ll thank me.
I know “K9 crystal” gets thrown around a lot. And it’s a great option. But here’s what you should actually look for.
Hold the crystal. Good ones are clear—really clear. No bubbles, no cloudiness, no greenish tint. The edges should be sharp, not rounded. When you hold it up to the light, you should see clean refraction, not a dull glow.
A K9 crystal chandelier from a reputable maker will give you that. Cheap imitations? They use glass that looks fine from a distance but loses its sparkle over time.
Also, look at how the crystals are attached. Are they on secure metal hooks or wires, or are they just glued on? Glue dries out. Hooks last.
This might sound funny, but it’s true. The chandelier you buy today will probably be in your home for years. Maybe decades. It’ll be there through birthdays, holidays, quiet mornings, late nights.
So choose something you actually love—not just something that matches a trend. Trends fade. A classic luxury crystal chandelier or a well-made modern crystal chandelier will still look beautiful ten years from now.
And take care of it. Dust it regularly. Clean it gently once or twice a year. Treat it like the piece of your home that it is. In return, it’ll make your space feel special every single day.
One Last Thing
I know buying a chandelier can feel like a big decision. It’s not like picking out a throw pillow. It’s an investment in how your home looks and feels.
If you’re unsure, reach out. Send me a photo of your room. Tell me what you’re thinking. I’ll give you my honest opinion—even if that means suggesting something smaller, or simpler, or waiting until you’re sure.
Because at the end of the day, I’m not just selling lamps. I’m helping people fall in love with their homes. And that’s worth taking the time to get right.
